Notes on getting out of my own way as an artist
I’ve been learning about how my creative practice works, and what I need to do to get out of my own way so that my paintings can happen more easily for me.
Some of this is just showing up and painting, with an emphasis on play and thinking outside of the old structure I used to think I had to work within.
Deep diving into my art making space
One of the best gifts I’ve given myself this autumn has been the permission to not have to produce any art at all.
It’s not about how much I put out there, share on my site or social media. I’ve decided to give myself space from that internal drive to produce more work, and that all of it has to be good.
Competition among artists is a pointless waste of time
I believe most competition is ridiculous, pointless, and needlessly programmed into all of us from Day 1.
Art Stories is here!
‘Art Stories’ is my first Ebook, and it’s free to download!
‘Art Stories’ was inspired by the stories that show up with every new image I find while making my paintings.
Every painting tells a story
This is my story about the Big White Fish.
You’re welcome to have your own story too.
A big white fish falls asleep in a hot pink watery place, and has a dream about a diver who comes to visit her.
Being an artist is for me first
As I’ve stepped back into having an art studio and painting again, I’ve updated and become more conscious about what being an artist means to me.
I took a break from painting in 2010, putting all of my energy into creating my psychic business, teaching classes, working with clients, and focusing on my writing.
Meditation brings inspiration and helps me manifest my creations
My best creative ideas don't show up when I'm in effort.
Trying extra hard does nothing to have those brilliant ideas flowing - in fact, it gets in the way.
You can't teach someone how to be an artist
You already are an artist, by virtue of being human.
Being human is a naturally creative experience.
A few of my favorite art making tools
Like every other artist I know, I have my favorite tools for making art.
Some of the tools I work with came to me from experience, some from study, many accidentally.
